Multigrade oils are engine oils that can be used in a wide temperature range. The oils are flowable in cold conditions and can reliably lubricate the engine. When heated, the oil does not become too thin and remains load resistant.

Multigrade oils are critical for the longevity of modern engines because the oil must be capable of providing the best possible protection in both hot and cold temperatures.

• Which grade is best in engine oil?

The lower the number, the better the flow. At start-up temperatures, a 5W-30 will flow easier than a 10W-30, and a 10W-30 will flow easier than a 10W-40 at normal engine operating temperatures.

• Is multigrade a mineral oil?
